7 Things to Do When You Lose your Mobile Phone

Being a police sub-inspector, I have performed my duties as an Emergency Officer at my Police station multiple times and during those times, one thing that many people came to me with, was to report the incidence of losing their stuffs. Sometimes it was a wallet full of important documents and cash, other times it was their smartphones/mobile phones. However, the common thing among all of them was that they didn’t have a clue about what should they do next and what is it that they may ask the police personnel to do in case they lost their important article/s.

In this blog, it is specifically this thing that we are going to target and I will tell you about the 7 things that you should do when you lose your mobile phones. Also, I will also cover the area of what you should do when you lose your important documents in the 8th point of the blog. So, here we go.

1. Locate the exact Place and Time–

The dreaded moment when you try to find your phone and you are unable to - can be really heart-breaking, especially if the EMIs of the expensive Apple/Samsung phone are still pending. However, it is very important that you keep your cool, overcome the feeling and go through your movements after you last used your phone and try to locate the exact place or nearby places where you believe that you may have lost your mobile phone.

Furthermore, it is very important that you can figure out the shortest time span possible in which you believe you lost your phone. This will help the police help you quickly.

2. Look For the CCTV Cameras –

Once you figure out the exact place and time span, scan the area with your eyes for the nearby CCTV cameras installed by the shops or houses. In this technology era, CCTV cameras are omnipresent, in fact according to 2021 Forbes Indiareport, New Delhi ranked first in terms of camera density in public places and is the most surveilled city in the world, way ahead of the cities like London, Shanghai and New York. This gives the city’s police an extra set of helping hand in solving crimes or tracking the lost items.

It can also help police figure out whether the item was really lost or god-forbid, stolen by someone, while you were distracted. Course of action you need to take if your phone was stolen changes and is explained in another blog.

3.     Call 112/Go to the nearby Police Station –

It is very important that the help of police is taken in this matter. To seek help, one can call on 112-National emergency helpline number for police in India, or reach nearby police station and meet with the Duty officer in the Police Station.

The duty officer is bound to direct the complainant towards the On-duty Emergency officer, who will then record the Lost report and give the complainant, his copy of the lost report. While getting the report filed, it is crucial that the IMEI numbers of the mobile phone is provided along with the bill or the Box of the phone.

IMEI numbers are the crucial numbers through which the phone can be tracked, which keeps the hope of finding the mobile phone alive.

4.     Ask the Emergency Officer for a Lost Report –

Emergency officer is bound to provide the lost report of the mobile phone with every detail noted on the LR(Lost Report). This LR can be used to re-issue the same mobile number that has been lost and block the SIM card. Also, one of the most important thing about getting an LR is that if the phone is used by non-social persons for any ill-actions, then it won’t be connected with the owner of the mobile phone.

Provide details to Emergency officer (EO) such as:

·        Mobile number
·        Make and model of the phone
·        IMEI number (available on the phone box or bill)
·        Date, time, and place of loss

A copy of the complaint is important for insurance claims and future reference.

It is crucial to know that LR can be generated manually by the person himself by visiting the online official websites of the state police/UT Police/Central Police.

For example – For Delhi Police the website is

https://lostfound.delhipolice.gov.in/LostApp/index.aspx

      5.  Raise a Complaint on CEIR Portal & Sanchar Sathi App –

Government of India has taken the view that lost/stolen mobile phones affect large number of people across the country and for that concrete steps are needed to be taken. Therefore, Dept. of Telecom has started (Central Equipment Identity Register) CEIR Portal and Sanchar Sathi App, through which a centralized system has been created in order to manage and tract mobile devices through their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.

By registering on the CEIR Portal and generating a complaint ID, the complainant can block the IMEI numbers and Unblock the same, as and when the phone is found.

      6.     Block the SIM card –

The SIM card of the complainant is a very crucial thing and needs to be blocked immediately, as it can be misused if it is accessed by some other persons. After blocking the number, the same number can again be obtained from the service provider’s office by showing them the LR.

By blocking the SIM card, the bank OTPs, bank messages, Social media Login details and important numbers can remain out of reach of any other person.

     7.     Track Recovery Status

If the phone is traced or recovered, police may contact you after verification. Recovery depends on technical tracing and local enquiry. Till the time it is traced by the police, you should buy another not so expensive phone in order to carry out day-to-day work.

     8.     Losing Important Documents

Losing important documents can be very frustrating, given the importance of those documents and the tedious process that one has to go through in order to re-apply for the copy of the documents.

LR should be filled in a detailed manner and every little aspect of the important documents should be covered in it by the EO, which will later help in re-applying for the copies of the documents. Therefore, help the EO fill the details in a precise manner. Later that the LR and re-apply for those documents at the concerned offices and get them again.

Important Points to Remember

  • Losing a phone is not a criminal offence by itself
  • Police complaint is mainly for documentation and recovery attempt
  • IMEI details significantly improve chances of tracing
  • SIM card is important to be blocked as sson as one can.

Conclusion

Losing a mobile phone or important documents can be stressful, but panic only delays recovery and protection. What truly matters is timely and informed action. From identifying the place and time of loss, involving the police, obtaining a proper Lost Report, blocking the SIM and IMEI through Sanchar Saathi/CEIR, to safeguarding your digital and financial data—each step plays a crucial role in minimising misuse and improving recovery chances.

From a policing perspective, it is important for citizens to understand that the police’s role in such cases is primarily documentation, prevention of misuse, and technical assistance for tracing. Providing accurate details, especially IMEI numbers and timelines, greatly strengthens the process. Similarly, in cases of lost documents, a well-drafted Lost Report becomes the foundation for re-issuance by concerned authorities.

In today’s digital age, awareness is your first line of defence. Knowing what to do, whom to approach, and what to expect from the police ensures that a difficult situation does not turn into a bigger problem. Stay calm, act promptly, and follow the procedure—because informed citizens and lawful processes together make recovery possible.
